Canon Gets it Right With Powershot SD880IS
Powershot SD880IS is a great model from Canon, well priced for the set of features it offers. It is a compact point-and-shoot, it's slim, lightweight, you can carry it in your pocket. However, it gives you flexibility, great quality of shots and a wide angle.
So let's see what's new since the previous SD870IS model:
- New DIGIC technology that improves the camera's performance in low light situations at high SEO settings. And the improvement in quality I noticed is quite sensitive. - New face detection technology. The faces have better contrasts and they don't get that bleach tone we were used to from SD870IS. Definitely an improvement! - Face detection self timer allows you to take a picture with the group. You simply focus the camera at the group, set the timer and walk into the group. The camera will notice the new face and update the settings for the shot. - 4x zoom, as compared to 3.8x on its predecessor. - The motion detection technique is improved. Now you can focus on a moving target, press the shutter button half way. Then you can simply take the shot even though the target has moved. - The 3" LCD looks the same in SD870IS and SD880IS, however the improved technology gives you brighter playback, which comes in handy in improperly lit areas.
Most of the other features are the same on this model and its predecessors. Some that I have used during my photographing experiences include:
- single shot and continuous shot modes. I personally use the continuous shot mode extensively when I want to capture something in motion: it gets me lots of images, and I just have to pick the best one - Image stabilization at high zoom levels - Support for PictBridge (print directly from camera without connecting to a computer) - Red eye reduction - even though the face detection technology minimizes the red eye effect, you can still get it, especially when shooting indoors. Canon SD880 Ultra Compact Camera Review
Although I do not consider myself an expert I have been using a camera for many years and am used to good quality SLR products. My intent with this camera was a compromise as I have found that I have lost many an opportunity to take that perfect shot simply because I did not have my camera with me when I needed it. I therefore wanted something that I could get into the habit of having with me at all times and still take noteworthy pictures and produce large format prints. A good full range zoom from wide angle to nailing more distant scenes along with a good macro function for close-ups and the ability to take a reasonable picture in difficult lighting situations are therefore all pre-requisites for a take everywhere camera. The ability to capture the odd video sequence, a function only recently available with the latest compact cameras being a handy and very desirable function.
I have to say that not only am I knocked out with the cameras performance in the above areas. I also found that the camera is delightfully easy to use in both a point and snap mode as well as when setting a more complex shot. The macro mode taking remarkably clear and focused shots, in one case taking a picture of an eye that was so magnified and clear that features not visible without a strong magnifying lens were apparent. With the addition of a 16Gb memory card and a spare battery I can take literally thousands of quality pictures and up to four hours of video whilst out and about.
Most cameras come by default supplied with just a small amount of memory, given the low cost of SD memory cards it is relatively inexpensive and well worth while to buy an additional card. SD cards are now readily available at up to 16Gb which will hold up to 12,000 high quality pictures.
On the negative side, I miss not having an eyepiece though I am finding that I am getting used to using a screen exclusively so that may be just habit. It would also have been nice to have a wide screen video mode as it has for still photos.
All in all, I am very impressed with this camera, now take it everywhere with me and have increased my output of great shots five fold as a result.

The camera has a 5x zoom, allowing you high quality resolutions on objects that are fairly far away. There are a large variety of shooting styles/modes in this Powershot. Our experts especially liked the focus check display mode. This particular feature identifies faces in the playback mode and then zooms in on them. This allows you to make sure that the faces are in focus. Very cool.
The lack of manual control may be frustrating for people who don't like shooting in a pre-set style. While it is true that there are plenty of pre-set options in place on this canon camera, someone who wants to have total control over image exposure might want to consider getting another of the canon digital cameras.
The SD890 IS takes a specially manufactured canon battery. These batteries are rechargeable but they are also a little on the expensive side. And charging can take up to two hours. If you are figuring on doing some time consuming shooting, you may end up spending a few bucks on backup batteries to keep yourself covered while you are in the field.
